Edible Wedding Cake Decor

Cakes are a major part of weddings and they are by far one of the things to which soon to be married couples pay a lot of attention.  A very popular feature of  modern wedding cakes is the edible decor.  It is no longer enough that cakes have decadent flavors but they also need to have decorations that can be eaten as well.

Edible Cake Toppers

Remember when couples used to display their wedding cake toppers on a shelf?  These days, couples prefer that their cake toppers be made of marshmallow instead of chalk.  Although there really aren’t any particular reason why this is the case, modern brides and grooms seem to lean more on the option of having edible cake toppers.

Most edible cake toppers are usually made of marshmallows, chocolate, sugar, and candy.

Edible Pearls

When it comes to more elegant and fancier wedding cakes, edible pearls are a hit.  This particular cake decor would look best on a chocolate frosted cakes because it creates a nice contrast to the darker color of the base.

These pearls are basically hardened sugar but they do taste good and they are definitely a great add-on to an otherwise boring wedding cake.

Sugar Daffodils

If you are having a garden themed wedding, a butter cream frosted chocolate cake laced with sugar daffodils would simply be to die for.  The sugar flowers would look well as a cake topper as well instead of the traditional and almost cliche bride and groom.

Edible Glitter

If your outdoor wedding reception is set after seven in the evening, edible glitter will make for perfect wedding cake decor.  They are perfectly safe to eat and they look even better on the cake.  Make sure that you capture as many photos of the cake before it is cut because glittered wedding cakes are definitely photo worthy.

There are other types of edible wedding cake decor such as:

Sugar Starfishes (for beach weddings)

Sprinkles

Small Petal Sugars

Miniature Cupcakes

Golf balls

Rubies

Rhinestones

Butterflies

Leaves

Miniature Tennis Balls

When choosing edible wedding cake decor, it is always prudent to first visualize the tentative outcome of the cake.  You would not want to have a cake that looks like it got lost in a sea of decor.  The cake still has to be the focus of attention and not all the decorations hanging over it.
